I honestly remember very few hooks from stories, themaninblackwalkedfledacrossthedesertandthegunslingerfollowed being the exception. I'm sure tons of stories I love have great hooks, including the two you mentioned, Jesse. They hooked me and I went on, I guess.
An iffy memory and laziness causes me to question the necessity of hooks pretty much every time I write something that doesn't start in media res. Then I take five minutes to rethink the first paragraph and it's all good. Somebody in my page one cast knows the point of the story. All they need from me is an excuse to act, talk, or think about it early.
